Vision

I believe that the Green Party is entering a very critical stage in its evolution. I believe that the electorate, tired of the partisan politic, empty promises and elusive platforms, are seeking an alternative to the same old, same old.
I also believe that we have a sound platform and a set of clearly articulated principles. I also believe that our platform and our principles can resonate with Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

However, we need to get our message out to the people. We need to attract, screen and support strong candidates in key ridings. We need to focus our support on those key ridings. We need to ensure that Elizabeth May runs in a winnable riding, and we must do everything we can to support her campaign and help her win her seat.

We need to have our own voice in Parliament, not the gallery. I believe that once we have elected our first set of MPs, we will have reached a tipping point where we will cease to be perceived as a fringe party, but rather as a real alternative, with a clear vision and a platform that can transform Canadian Politics and Canada.

I also believe that we need to work on the business aspect of our party. We need to develop and deliver training programs for all our volunteers. We need to formalize our sharing of best practices. We need provide our Electoral District Associations with the necessary training and resources, in order to run efficient and effective membership drives, fundraising campaigns, electoral campaigns and EDA back-office operations.

Think Green. Act Green. Vote Green!

« Vert » l’avenir.

Pensons Vert. Agissons Vert. Votons Vert!

Well it’s that time of the year again. The mast is off the boat, awaiting crane day at the Vernon Yacht Club. The curling season is in full swing. Silver Star has groomed its Nordic trails, and I’m itching to wax my skis.

It’s also that time of year where the politicians, in this country of ours, loose their ethical bearings and vote with their seat instead of there brains.

There is a lot of Conservative smoke and mirrors about getting tough on crime. They want to impose mandatory minimum sentences, which has proved to be, in any other jurisdiction that has gone that way, more expensive (keeping people in jail longer ) and ineffective in lowering crime rates.

Conservatives don’t seem to get that it’s a more effective to invest in preventing crime by attacking the causes like poverty.

They’re only in it for the sizzle not the substance and their constituents buy it hook line and sinker. ‘An eye for an eye’ resonates a lot more with them then ‘forgive those who trespass against us…’

Anyway, I can forgive conservative MPs for backing the bill to abolish the long gun registry, after all, they are not really allowed to vote ‘with their conscience’; they have to tow the dogma line or answer to Steve.

However, it’s harder to forgive the 18 New Democrats and Liberals who supported it. I guess they must have listened to all those Conservative infomercials.

Sure the gun registry wasted a hell of a lot money, but so did the various eHealth initiatives, but are we scrapping Universal Health Care?

I can’t think of a single good reason with I should not register my long guns. Hell! I registered my car, my boat and even my dog, so why would I object to registering my rifle.

If having the gun registry serves only to remind gun owners and would-be owners the seriousness of their responsibilities around owning and storing a gun, then it’s worth having.

If having the gun registry saves only one life, like the life of a child who cannot play with his/her parent’s gun because it is properly stored and locked, then it’s worth having.

Like many Canadians, I felt that the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP did not represent my values or priorities. I had been reduced to voting for the least offensive party/candidate in my riding.

Like many Canadians, I also suffered from the misguided impression that the Green Party was a one-issue fringe party that did not have a comprehensive platform.

During the last federal election, I was very impressed by the Green Party’s local candidate, Huguette Allen. Intrigued, I researched the Green Party’s platform and discovered that it was indeed comprehensive and more importantly, it resonated completely with me. I had found my party, my voice. Consequently, I joined the party and began working actively on Huguette’s campaign.

Though new to the Party, I bring 30 plus years of experience as a senior manager in both public and private sectors. I have worked in the Ontario College system as a professor, chair, dean and director of information systems. I have worked in health care as the Chief Information Officer for a group of hospitals. I have extensive experience in the private sector as a software engineer, architect and senior manager. I am currently the Executive Vice President of CourtCanada Limited, a company I co-founded whose mission is to deliver innovative, useful, cost-effective, green solutions to the judicial system.

I have lived and worked in Quebec, Ontario, England, the US and now make my home in British Columbia. I am fluently bilingual/bicultural. Consequently, I have a Pan-Canadian perspective. I’ am simply a Canadian, not just a Quebecois, Ontarian or British Columbian.

I have served on a number of boards and community associations such as Vision North Okanagan, CPS-ECP Western Canadian Inland District, Ottawa Carleton Health Information Network, Ottawa Carleton Research Institute, and on boards of corporations such as CourtCanada Limited, The Guelph Country Club and ONet Networking.

I believe that the diversity of my background, interest and experiences will allow me to bring a fresh perspective to our Party. I also believe that it will assist me greatly in fulfilling the duties of a Councilor at Large.

Thank you for your support,

During the last federal election, I was faced with a dilemma. The incumbent MP, Colin Mayes, was not exactly awe inspiring. His 15 minutes of fame was sparked by an email he sent his ‘friends’ which contained a derogatory joke concerning our first nation’s people. Not the kind of thing to expect from the chair of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development. His few contributions to Hansard, also convinced me that he was a “republiCon”, someone whose values would make him feel much more at home in Bush-Country than Canada.
Unfortunatly, the riding was a ’safe’ conservative riding and as long as he able to breathe while keeping his mouth shut he was very
likely to be re-elected.

I began researching our ridings voting history and became convinced that those who opposed Harper’s minion Mayes, would have to
vote strategically. It also looked like the NDP candidate, having finished second in the previous election, had the best chance. So I began to blog, wherever I could, to that effect.

One of the responses to my comments on a one of the blogs, challenged me to look more closely at the Green candidate Hugette
Allen. Like many Canadians, I had the misguided impression that the Green Party was a one-issue fringe party that did not have a
comprehensive platform. After attending the first all candidate’s meeting, I was so impressed with Hugette Allen’s position on the
range of issues that were being discussed, that I began to research the Green Party. I discovered they indeed had a comprehensive
platform with which I was in complete alignment with. They also had six guiding principles from which all policies must adhere to. The
platform and principles resonated with me so strongly, that I picked up the phone, joined the party and started working actively to elect
Hugette.

After years of holding my nose and voting for the least offensive candidate, I have finally found a party worth working for and a
candidate worth voting for.

As for my hair, or what’s left of it, it still has not turned gray.

A Short Story

By

Guy Morazain

Alfred approached the tee and stood about 5 feet behind the ball. “Draw an imaginary line between the ball and the flag” he said to himself. “Now visualize the shot!” He read somewhere, probably in one of the golf books his girls had given him for Christmas that you should visualize the shot, and so he tried, but nothing came, it never did. Not that he lacked the imagination to conjure up a flight path for the ball; it’s just that he never knew which trajectory his ball would actually take, let alone which trajectory it should take. How high should it arc, should it go from left to right, right to left, straight? There were just too many possibilities to be able to settle on just one.

He moved into position over the ball. He shuffled crablike left then right then left again until he was satisfied that he was properly aligned; heels in line with the target, ball 3 inches back from a line perpendicular to target, extending from his left toe.
He then stepped back 6 inches, raised his club slowly stopping when the club head was a shoulder height , cocked his wrists and brought the club down with force, following through until the club’s shaft rested awkwardly on his back. He readjusted his stance and repeated his practice swing twice more. Now that he had completed his routine, he shuffled 6 inches forward in his stance. “Develop a routine” one of his books advised, “It will help you become more consistent”.

He hated this hole. A par 3, elevated tee, 167 yards to a green well protected by deep bunkers in front and on both sides. Tall pines lined the narrow fairway waiting to intercept his ball and sending it God knows where. Just don’t hit a tree he prayed to himself.

“Enough! Clear your mind of negative thoughts! Positive thinking is the key.” Positive thinking was a mantra also borrowed from one of the books. He visualized the hole, no longer hemmed in by the towering pines, wide open and inviting.

The rest of his foursome, Ed, Andy and Bill had already taken their shot. They were all dancing on the green, close enough to the pin for a good shot at birdie. He could hear the subtle tell tales signs of their eagerness, nothing however that would constitute a lack of courtesy or a breach of golf etiquette; just the hint of restlessness that accompanied testosterone driven excitement.

“Take you time, life is not that short ” he countered in his head. That mantra was a favorite of his wife’s yoga instructor. Alice had a habit of racing from one position to the next. That was never one of Alfred’s problems. In yoga as in life, he was slow and deliberate.

He had been playing with this same foursome every Wednesday morning for 5 years now. 5 Years, had it really been that long since he retired? He was amazed at how fast time had flown. Five years ago he had sold his practice, retired and took up golf. The girls were much more enthusiastic about his interest in golf that he was. It soothed them to think he had developed an interest in something other than work or in taking care of them. It also supplied them with a ready made theme for gifts. For the past 25 years, he had raised them on his own. He had made the center of their world, his. Their mother had died when Kathy, his eldest, had barely turned 5. He had never remarried, let alone dated anyone.

“Inhale, take a deep breath, let it out slowly. Relax your grip.”

Two women in his life were already two too many he would say jokingly when someone would try to set him up with a date. Well that was not quite true, he thought. He had gone out on a date once, well almost. It was with Kathy’s grade 3 teacher, Ms. Granger. He could not remember her first name, was it Mary? Martha? He was not quite sure how it had happened, but remembered that he had emerged from a parent-teacher interview with a date to take her to dinner the next night. Though he could no longer conjure up her face, he remembered that she had struck him as being very pretty. There was also something magical about her eyes, not so much the color but the sparkle; it warmed him just to think about it. She called the next morning to cancel the date. It was too awkward to date the parent of one of her students, she had said. She left him hanging with the suggestion that perhaps they could postpone the date till after the school year was over.

“Keep you eye on the ball and your head down”

He had not thought of ‘Mary’ in long, long while. He used to think about her often at first; wondering how he could bring into his life, his girls lives? How long should they date before he popped the question? Should they move to a new house, get a fresh start? How would the girls react? Would they reject her? Would they end up hating him? They never did go on that date. Summer came and she was gone. Left town, left teaching, left him without even knowing it.

“Raise the club slowly back ”

The girls had been his talisman against loneliness. Between work and the girls, there was never enough time to indulge in moments of self pity. He plodded on. Ballet, horseback ridding, scrapped knees, figure skating, high school, dances, boys, proms, college, cars, and weddings had kept him busy and out of trouble. So now it was golf and thoughts of grand children that kept him busy these days.

“Cock you wrists”

Then he thought of Alice, Alice and her crooked smile and ready laugh. He wondered where life would have taken them had she had not been killed by that drunk. The drunk who got off with only a 6 month suspended license, he had a young family and they needed him his lawyer had successfully pleaded. This was a bad thought to have when your club is on its downswing.

Tension flowed through his arms driving the club head down with an unnatural force, through to his hands locking his wrists, the club head pivoting in response and striking the ball well off the head’s sweet spot, giving the ball a forward spin and adrenalin induced momentum.

It plunged down below the elevated tee’s embankment, disappearing from sight, pinging off a sprinkler head, abruptly changing course, reappearing as it flew in a gentle arc towards the green, landing on the far left fringe, rolling back ever so slowly towards the pin.
He caught sight of the ball as it began its decent on the green and watched mesmerized by the poetry of its flight. They all watched! Time stopped! Then Bill broke the spell by declaring Holy Shit! I think it went in!

It’s been just over two years since the Big Move. We discovered to our pleasure that the Okanagan was everything and more that we had anticipated. My wife Pauline was initially concerned that she might suffer from work-withdrawal, or utter boredom. She was leaving behind a high pressure job, as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Guelph. She thought she might start looking for work after the ski season.

I on the other hand, was looking forward to a life of leisure. Skiing (Alpine, Nordic classic and skate, and Telemark), curling, golfing and sailing would keep me busy and out of trouble, if not, I could always do a contract or two.

After the end of the ski season, we moved down from our comfi-condo on Silver Star to our condo overlooking Lake Okanagan. Between, getting to know our neighbours, sailing, wine touring, golf and a steady stream of guests, there was little room for Pauline to look for work. Pauline was always very active as a volunteer. She has been appointed to a number of Boards, such as our local community association LECA and Hospice.

As for me, I started a company with my nephew and some friends which keep me busy doing R&D. After a hectic 8-9 months getting it off the ground, I have been able to reduce my commitment to 1 & ½ days a week. The company, CourtCanada is making significant inroads into the Ontario court system and is well poised to expand into other jurisdictions. I’m also involved in a host of other projects including starting the Vernon Chapter of the Billies, setting up the SilverStar Bridge Club website, The LECA web site, The CPS Vernon Squadron website and my favorite project – producing Amanda’s CD.

Mathew, our youngest son, and his wife Amada and our grand-daughter Keala, decided to leave Ottawa and also move to the Okanagan. Mathew, a fabulous chef, came in March to scout around and landed a great job with Quail’s Gate winery’s retaurant. Amanda stayed in Ottawa to wrap things up until July. Pauline volunteered to help Amanda and Keala drive across Canada. They settle in West Bank 45 km down the road from us. It did not take long for Amanda to establish herself as a vocal and piano teacher. She also continued her career as a Jazz singer.

Our Oldest son Sacha, his wife Aleksandra (a.k.a. Ola), my two grandsons Logan and Max and Sacha`s in-laws, came to visits this past Fall. Unfortunately for us but fortunately for Sacha his company Projx that he established a few years ago when he returned to Ottawa after 3 years at sea, has really taken off. So it’s unlikely that they too will move to the Okanagan any time soon.

Wintering at SilverStar is magical. SilverStar is very much a community. We have had the opportunity of meeting and befriending a number of great people who come to SilverStar from across Canada, the US and Australia. We have an active Bridge group , a Cross-Country racing team The G.O.A.Ts, a Scrabble group and some of the best skiing in the world.

Summering in Vernon is also magical. The view from our deck is so restful that it energizes you. The Vernon Yacht Club is only 15 minutes away. We used to have a 1 & ½ hour drive to get to our boat in Wiarton, when we lived in Elora. I joined Predator Ridge, a premier golf course, only 20 minutes away from home. There are endless wineries that we have discovered and enjoy, my favorite being Quinta Ferreira. Their Malbec is outstanding.

In short, life in the Okanagan is good, very very good. It’s Paradise, found!

Magoo, Pauline and Guy have finally retired. We are moving to Vernon BC. We were planning to travel in our two car convoy, but last weekend, a truck jumped a stop sign and totaled Guy’s Beetle. JAVAVM is no more.

This also delayed our departure by two days. We originally hoped to be on the road, Saturday February 3rd, the day after we retired, but we had to wait for the final work from the insurance company vis-à -vis Guy’s car. We also had quite a challenge getting all our wordly possessions into one car. Though we moved the bulk of our stuff in July, Guy’s wine kept dribbling in during the last 6 months, and Pauline added a few paintings to her collection. It also gave us a great excuse to spend some quality time with George and Wendy who kindly put us up for the weekend.
Since wine transportation and the U.S. border don’t mix, we will be taking the Northern route.

Though we have no strict agenda, we intend to motor along as follows:

Guelph – Sault Ste Marie

Sault Ste Marie – Thunder Bay>

ThunderBay – Elie, MB

Elie, MB – Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat – Vernon

If the weather turns nasty we’ll hole up in a motel and go through some of the wine!

Leg One start’s tomorrow at 6:00 am

We’ll update the site as we move along and have internet access.

Last night was wonderful. We spent the evening with George and Wendy, sharing a meal, memories and plans for the future.

Morning came too fast. We loaded the car and the road, by 7:00 Just in case you were wondering where Pauline’s oil burner was, we had decided to trade it in for a new Toyota Matrix. It’s amazing how much you can stuff into that car. It was a seen out of the Grapes of Wrath, the car was loaded to the gills. We managed to find Magoo a perch on top of our belonging and off we went. George and Wendy also hit the road for Kingston where George is getting a bionic implant. It’s amazing what some people will do to improve their golf game.

The road from Guelph was snow covered and slow going. We witnessed a couple of accidents along the way that reinforced the need for caution. Once we got to Parry Sound, the road conditions improved and we started making good time. We stopped in Blind River to reminisce about the bare boat charters of the North Channel we took when Guy introduced Pauline to Sailing and the effects of tornadoes on anchorages.

We arrived in Sault Ste Marie, around 5:00 pm. We were done unpacking Guy’s wine by six.

We searched around for a place to eat and came across a Lone Star restaurant, where we shared fajitas and great memories of all the Friday nights we would bring the kids to the original Lone Star in Ottawa. This trip is turning out to be more about memories than miles. I guess that’s how it should be.

Tomorrow we head for Thunder Bay.

West of the Sault was supposed to be clear, so we headed out, in the dark early morning, in the midst of a storm. White outs and white knuckled passenger-ing, we (Guy that is) bravely kept going for over 3 hours. Besides hanging onto her car seat for dear life ,Pauline had not experienced such snow squalls since her childhood in Chicoutimi/Bagotville, Quebec. Finally we were rewarded by blue skies and smooth sailing from Wawa on.

A black cloud was forming as we approached Nipigon, it turned out to be a fire at the plywood mill. The mill had just been purchased by the locals in an effort to stave off its closure, another tragedy in the making.

We reached Thunder Bay well before schedule and decided to push on to Dryden. If we were lucky, we could stay in a motel once frequented by our friend. Denyse Boom-Boom Burns. Denyse, now a Manhattanite, sold dreams of far away places in this mill town. All three of us and especially Magoo had no problem dreaming and hoping that we would soon be leaving this haven of 30 blow centigrade (45 with wind chill).

Once we crossed the border to Manitoba, the Trans-Canada transformed itself from a one-lane, one horse embarrassment Ontario Highway 17 to a proper 4 lane Trans Canada Highway #1.

We hit our original destination of Elie Manitoba, around 10:30 am. Elie is not only Guy’s mother’s maiden name, but the home of Ken and Monique. We were looking forward to seeing them again. They had even offered to put up with us for the night, but the call of the road was too strong. So we motored on! And on! And on! Through the flat lands in Manitoba, into Saskatchewan arriving in Regina in time for tea.

We are now way ahead of schedule. We also have loading and unloading the car down to an art form. We are still hoping to get holed up somewhere where can start making a dent into the wine, but so far the weather has been just teasing us. Well we have nipped into the scotch that Mary (Pauline’s real boss) gave us to celebrate our retirement!

The expanse of this Country is truly amazing. Neither of us have had the privilege of driving the Trans Canada highway in winter. The sky and open spaces of the Prairies are breathtaking (our pictures do not do it justice). We hope to get a sunrise on the Prairies for you tomorrow!

Another trouble free ride, welcomed us as we left Regina. The sunrise chased us for miles. We made great time arriving in Brook, AB in time for lunch and Canmore for tea. We are now settled into a quaint 70’s era, dog friendly inn.

We hope to enjoy more of the Rockies in daylight so we are planning to sleep in tomorrow morning and let the sun rise before us for a change. Unless of course, Magoo has other plans for us.

It’s snowing in Golden and Kicking Horse pass. Hopefully it will not interfere with our plans to reach Vernon by early afternoon. So far we have been able to beat the weather.

The Bruce was being hit as we drove through it, but we managed to escape the worst of it. Same with the Sault.

Worse case we’ll end up spending a day or two here. Guy has a date with the cable guy on Monday, so we can Internet at the house, but it can always be re-scheduled for later. We’re not in any rush and there is nothing we can’t put off till tomorrow. Heck we’re retired!

Pauline who has often been accused of skiing more uphill than down, and Guy who careens down any hill he can, making a turn only when absolutely necessary, drive the same way they ski. Seldome on the same hill, they now have been in the same car for the better part of a week.

This last leg, the shortest by far, proved to be the biggest test of our relationship. The first 350 kms were a series of ups, downs and tight turns on greasy road conditions. Testy exclamations and quick retorts were the order of the day.

After a hearty lunch stop in Revelstoke, Pauline took the wheel and peace returned to the Matrix as Magoo and Guy dosed off.

We reached Vernon, all in one piece in the early afternoon. We unpacked the car, kicked off our shoes and had two fingers of Mary’s Johnnie Walker Black.
